Rockstar: Grand Theft Auto V may come to Nintendo Wii U

Grand Theft Auto has never graced a Nintendo home console, but the new Wii U may change all of that. Company co-founder and series mastermind Dan Houser says Grand Theft Auto V could come to Wii U.

The console’s only been on shelves for one day, but already the Wii U is enjoying better third-party support than it has in more than half a decade. Even during the Gamecube days, though, Nintendo wasn’t guaranteed to see versions of PlayStation 2 and Xbox games on its console. Electronic Arts, Ubiosoft and Activision regularly brought their multiplatform titles to Nintendo’s machine, but many others skipped it. At launch, Nintendo has games from all of the above, as well as games like Tekken Tag Tournament 2 from Namco Bandai, Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge from Tecmo Koei, and Batman: Arkham City—Armored Edition from Warner Bros. Interactive. Signs are good that Nintendo may even have support from unexpected corners since Rockstar Games is hinting that it will bring its signature franchise to a Nintendo home console for the first time.

Rockstar Games co-founder and series creator Dan Houser suggested in a new interview that he’ll be bringing Grand Theft Auto V to the Nintendo Wii U. When asked whether the sequel would hit Nintendo’s console and PCs after releasing on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next year, Houser said it’s likely.

“Everything else is up for consideration. That’s all I can give you,” Houser told IGN, “The main thing is… we are a third-party publisher. We’re not Nintendo, we’re not Sony, we’re not Microsoft. We love all of them in different ways. But we can do what we want whenever there’s the appropriate business opportunity and chance to find a market. If that’s on Apple we put something on Apple. Wherever it might be. I think that’s the fun in what we do. We see ourselves as a content company that uses technology. We don’t make it; we use it to make the most fun stuff.”

Rockstar Games has had a peculiar relationship with Nintendo in the years since Grand Theft Auto III made it one of the industry’s premiere creators. Even as the series moved to other consoles with the Xbox release of Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on Xbox in 2003, Rockstar never brought it to one of Nintendo’s home consoles. Instead Rockstar has released versions of its less popular though just as controversial titles for Nintendo’s Wii, including motion controlled editions of Bully and Manhunt 2. It did develop a spin off series, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, for the Nintendo DS.
