Microsoft’s Outlook email client reaches 25 million user milestone, launches new features and Android app

microsoft outlook 25 million accounts

Microsoft is celebrating the 25 million active user landmark for its Outlook email client by launching additional features and an Android app.

Today Microsoft announced that Outlook reached its 25 million active user milestone, an achievement worth celebrating especially when Microsoft claims that four out of five Gmail users “would” switch to Outlook. And Microsoft isn’t slowing down: It will introduce a slew of new features for Outlook in the coming weeks.

If you’re familiar with the Bing It On Challenge – sponsored by Microsoft – then its recent findings about Outlook will feel familiar. Results based on a study from a Microsoft hired research firm that gauged the sentiments of Gmail users about Outlook found that users preferred Outlook’s design, filters, and document sharing features. Seeing as how there isn’t an independent study at hand aside from the one commissioned by Microsoft, we’re going to justify our opinion of Outlook based on our hands on with the email client - and ultimately, we were pretty impressed.

While Outlook has a good thing going with its streamlined interface, unlike the increasingly cluttered and chaotic Gmail, Microsoft plans on adding additional features to Outlook. “We continue to listen to feedback on what enthusiasts want next – including making the switch from Gmail even easier – and build those features,” said David Law, Windows Live product marketing manager, in a blog post.

Users can archive messages with the click of the “Archive” button and store the messages in any folder on Outlook.

microsoft outlook keyboard shortcuts

People love keyboard shortcuts. By typing “?” when you’re in your inbox, a window with all (and new) keyboard shortcuts will open up.

microsoft outlook color customization

More color themes have been added.

microsoft outlook android appiPhone and Windows Phone users already have their own apps but now Android users will be as lucky. Exchange ActiveSync wasn’t supported natively on the Android OS. But now Microsoft is offering an Outlook Android app, which you can download directly from the Google Play store. The app is free to download and supports the following Android versions: 2.1 – 2.3.3 and 4.0 – 4.1.

Set a Reply-To email address

Email Reply To PrefsAlthough you can add up to 16 different email accounts to the webOS Email app and easily switch between them, there are times where you may want someone to reply to a different email address than the one that the message is being sent from. This can be the case if you have a "forwarding" email address that isn't a full blown email account but just an alias that forwards it along to another address, or you may be using your personal email account on your device for work and you want the recipient to reply directly to your work account. Although the "from" address will still show the account you are sending it from, you can set a "reply to" address in the Email Preferences for each individual account you have added to the Email app.

To set your reply-to address

Open the Email appSwipe down from the top-left to access the Application drop-down menu and select "Preferences & Accounts"Scroll down to the ACCOUNTS section and tap the account you want to updateScroll down to the REPLY-TO ADDRESS section and sent the email address you want people to reply toSwipe back (on phones) or tap Done (on the TouchPad) to return to the Preferences screenIf necessary, repleat for any other email accounts you want to updateSwipe back (on phones) or tap Done (on the TouchPad) again to return to the email app

From that point on, any email you send will now have a "reply to" email address that most modern email programs will use when replying to your email. Remember that this also means that the account you sent the email from will not receive the reply. If you need to remove the reply-to email address, just follow the steps above and clear out the email address in the REPLY-TO ADDRESS section.

Community Troubleshooting: Are you experiencing e-mail duplications on your BlackBerry PlayBook?

 PlayBook email

With every update to the BlackBerry PlayBook OS we get some cool new features and speed improvements, but sometimes things get a little broken in the mix. A few CrackBerry members have been vocal in the CrackBerry forums on an issue they are experiencing that results in the duplication of emails on the BlackBerry PlayBook, and subsequently those duplicates being emailed to the original recipient.  There is also a thread started on BlackBerry's support site, and here is a quote from one of the original posters:

I upgraded to the new OS for my playbook and everytime I send a message with my work e-mail I get a duplicate message sent. After I press send the message goes to a red X and a top of the message it reads "there was an interruption in sending this message please try again" Yet I get the same e-mail message I created with a check mark saying it was sent. After a little while the original message gets sent. So I am getting duplicate messages being sent. - this account is my work Exchange Server. I have other e-mail accounts on my playbook - gmail - and I do not get duplicates with those ones.

First I wanted to say thanks to the community for pointing this out to us, as well we have reached out to RIM in order to see if this is a known issue, and if there is a fix on the way. But while we give RIM some time to investigate this, I wanted to reach out to the CrackBerry Community to see if anyone else has experienced this issue. If you have, what have done to correct it? Chime in on the comments below, or head over to the forums.
