Visteon shows off the future of automotive electronics with its e-Bee concept

There is a lot more to a car than the engine and wheels, and Visteon aims to show how little details, and a whole lot of tech, can make a car even better.

Features like navigation and infotainment systems are becoming increasingly important to consumers when looking for a car to buy, and automakers that make the best use of the newest technologies in these areas will having an ever-increasing advantage over their competitors. So to showcase where they believe these trends will be heading in the near future, automotive supplier Visteon has created a concept car, known as the e-Bee, filled with current and near-future tech.

The e-Bee is based on the Nissan Leaf, which seems like a logical choice as an electronics showcase, but there was even more to it than that. Visteon was also showing off a new climate control system that incorporates both the heating and air conditioning into one unit. This saves electricity, particularly in cold weather, thus improving the vehicle’s range while using the climate control. Much of the instrumentation has been replaced by screens, and touchscreens have also replaced the switchgear, infotainment and headlight controls. A screen even replaced the rearview mirror, offering a much wider field of view.

The car has the ability to sync with your various mobile devices as well, and can even read your calendar to determine whether you’re on your way to an appointment, and then automatically update the navigation system accordingly. The interior surfaces are made of recycled materials and manufactured by Visteon to save weight when compared to materials being used currently. Connectivity will be important, and as such, the e-Bee is designed to use open-source programs which can be updated regularly over the life of the vehicle. The car will be a rolling Wi-Fi hotspot, andwas built with the idea in mind that people would use it for ride sharing programs, and that these people would be able to get work done in the car.

These are some exciting ideas, although there are those would seek to further limit such communications equipment in cars as a safety measure. It remains to be seen whether it will be technological advancement or legislation which shapes the future of our cars’ interiors, but we like the e-Bee anyway. CNET reports that the car will be making an appearance at CES in early January, where we’ll likely get some hands-on time for ourselves.

X-Men: Days of Future Past brings back Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen

xmen v

X-Men: Days of Future Past has more than just a classic X-Men director on board. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, the original Professor X and Magneto, will be in the new installment when it comes out in 2014.

With box office records broken by movies like The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises and a slate of even more superhero movies coming like Iron Man 3 and Man of Steel in 2013, it’s time to face facts: The Golden Age of superhero flicks is over. We are now into the Silver Age, that period of refinement and invention. The movies from that naïve era of the early ’00s are now officially old school. The franchises like Spider-man and X-Men have already been successfully rebooted! That doesn’t mean there isn’t still room for some of the old in the new school, though. The cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past will have cast alums from both First Class and the decade-old franchise.

Director Bryan Singer confirmed via Twitter on Tuesday that Ian McKellen would play Erik “Magneto” Lensher opposite Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier in the new movie. The elder mutant leaders will appear alongside their younger counterparts as Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy will return as Magneto and Professor X respectively as well.

It’s been ten years exactly since Singer’s last X-Men movie, X2, which is still a gold standard for movies about aged super beings yelling at each other in plastic prisons.

Apple promotes Craig Federighi, Dan Riccio to SVP, Executive Team, Bob Mansfield staying on to work on

Apple has just announced that Craig Federighi is being promoted, fully taking the long-departed Betrand Serlet's post as senior vice-president of Mac software engineering, and his place on the Executive Committee. Also, as expected, Dan Riccio has been promoted to SVP of hardware engineering, and will also be joining the Executive Committee. However, Apple also announced that the man Riccio was to replace, Bob Mansfield, will no longer be retiring, but will be staying with Apple to work on "future projects". All three will report to Apple CEO, Tim Cook, and all three now appear on Apple's Leadership page.

Interestingly, both Mansfield and Riccio are listed as SVPs of hardware engineering, while Federighi joins Scott Forstall as an SVP of software engineering, though Forstall is listed as iOS and Federighi as OS X. Apple considers software important enough to have SVPs for both iOS and OS X, but not to have designated SVPs for iOS as opposed to OS X hardware. Likewise, Jony Ive remains listed as SVP of industrial design across all platforms.

Amazing to see how much Apple's leadership has both changed, and remained the same over the course of the last two years.

Complete press release below.

CUPERTINO, California—August 27, 2012—Apple® today announced that Craig Federighi, Apple’s vice president of Mac Software Engineering, and Dan Riccio, Apple’s vice president of Hardware Engineering, have been promoted to senior vice presidents. Federighi and Riccio will report to Apple CEO Tim Cook and serve on Apple’s executive management team.

Apple also announced that Bob Mansfield, who announced his retirement in June, will remain at Apple. Mansfield will work on future products, reporting to Tim Cook.

As senior vice president of Mac Software Engineering, Federighi will continue to be responsible for the development of Mac OS® X and Apple’s common operating system engineering teams. Federighi worked at NeXT, followed by Apple, and then spent a decade at Ariba where he held several roles including vice president of Internet Services and chief technology officer. He returned to Apple in 2009 to lead Mac OS X engineering. Federighi holds a Master of Science degree in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley.

Riccio, as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, will lead the Mac®, iPhone®, iPad® and iPod® engineering teams. He has been instrumental in all of Apple’s iPad products since the first generation iPad. Riccio joined Apple in 1998 as vice president of Product Design and has been a key contributor to most of Apple’s hardware over his career. Dan earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1986.

Apple designs Macs, the best personal computers in the world, along with OS X, iLife, iWork and professional software. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store. Apple has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices with iPad.
