Foxconn linked to own-brand Amazon and Microsoft smartphones again, mid-2013 release currently being targeted

Foxconn has again been linked with Amazon and Microsoft's future own-brand smartphone plans, with the Chinese manufacturer said to be preparing devices for both companies, ready for a mid-2013 release date.

Two of the most enduring mobile industry rumors of the past year have received another boost along the road to becoming reality, as Foxconn may have taken orders from both Microsoft and Amazon to their own-brand smartphones. The report comes from notorious gossipers DigiTimes, which doesn’t instill us with all that much confidence, however it’s not as if the news is coming out of the blue.

Quoting sources inside the “upstream supply chain,” the phones are supposedly headed for a mid-2013 release, but will have a “limited shipment volume initially.” Amazon almost always releases its hardware in the U.S. first, and prefers to wait at least a year before sending them out into the world, so this at least sounds consistent with its previous hardware strategy.

Rumors of Amazon’s smartphone plans started gathering pace during the summer, when several news sources linked Foxconn with the retailer, and mentioned a late 2012 or early 2013 date for when production would begin. Although last minute rumors pointed to the phone being launched at Amazon’s September event, it failed to materialize.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos isn’t helping the rumors surrounding an Amazon phone die either. In an interview with Charlie Rose earlier this month, he responded to a question regarding the mythical device by saying “we’re very reluctant to discuss our future roadmap … I will have to decline to answer that question,” to which Rose responded “because it might incriminate you?” Bezos laughs, “yes, I’ll just have to ask you to stay tuned.” His response was almost verbatim to the one he gave in an interview with CNN Money, again asking us to “stay tuned” regarding an Amazon smartphone. Just before this, Bezos told AllThingsD’s Tricia Duryee that the company would be launching new hardware “not anytime soon, but next year.”

As for Microsoft, any Windows Phone 8 — which DigiTimes sources say the new phone will run — handset it releases will inevitably cause friction between it and its existing hardware partners, so perhaps the new phone will be sold where Windows Phone has yet to make an impact, in a effort to help reduce tension. This would be one explanation for an initially low supply run.

Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s CEO, recently said the company was “obviously” looking at releasing new hardware, but didn’t specifically mention smartphones. However, another source claimed the software company had already started testing such a device.

Microsoft needs Windows Phone 8 to be successful, and in the same way as it used the Surface tablet to promote Windows RT, a Surface phone could give WP8 a boost in new territories too. Several of its partners took a dim view of the Surface tablet, with Acer’s CEO telling the company it was no good at manufacturing hardware. Microsoft hasn’t taken a “tread carefully” approach with its Windows 8 strategy so far, so Acer’s warnings will have likely fallen on deaf ears.

Should a mid-2013 launch date for Amazon and Microsoft’s new phone hardware prove accurate, then the period between June and August next year could be equally as busy as it was this year, when Google, Microsoft and Apple all paraded new hardware and software in front of the world at huge events. However, right now, this is all speculation, and we expect there is plenty more of it to come too.

BlackBerry 10 L Series phone leaked again, still weeks away from launch

BlackBerry 10 L Series Leak

Research in Motion's touchscreen BlackBerry 10 handset, the L Series, has been leaked again, this time showing it compared to a BlackBerry Bold 9700. RIM will officially announce BlackBerry 10 and its hardware on January 30 next year.

The L Series BlackBerry 10 phone has been leaked again, this time appearing in CrackBerry.com’s forums, where a handful of pictures showed the phone up close, as well as being compared to a BlackBerry Bold 9700.

Research in Motion’s L Series handset is one of two phones on which it will launch the BlackBerry 10 operating system next year, where it will be joined by the more traditional QWERTY keyboard-equipped N Series.

In the snaps, the L Series — marked as an evaluation unit — looks the same as it did back in September, when both it and the N Series phone last appeared. The long, black chassis remains, while the front has the slight look of Sony’s Xperia range to it, thanks to the edgeless screen. Sitting next to the Bold, it also looks quite long.

The source of the leak hasn’t provided any more information on the specification, but if previous rumors are correct, that’s a 4.2-inch screen with a 1280 x 768 pixel resolution, and a dual-core processor should be hiding inside.

RIM has already announced when the L Series will be made official, as it will be holding an ambitious, global launch event for BlackBerry 10 on January 30 next year, where both phones and the new software will finally make their public debut.

There were concerns RIM would miss the first quarter release date, which it has continually stood by, but according to the company’s COO Kristian Tear, BB10 handsets will on sale within 30 days of that event. This means it’ll make its self-imposed deadline, but only by a whisker.

Despite the fact the OS is still a bit of a mystery, and there are several months to go until we get to try it out, the company’s stock has been performing well; perhaps assisted by BlackBerry 10 gaining government security clearance and RIM drip-feeding us details on new, interesting features such as BBM Voice.

Will the L Series be enough to tempt iOS, Android and even Windows Phone fans away and into RIM’s waiting arms? We’ll find out next year.

Lumia 920’s video image-stabilization shown in live test. Beats Samsung GS3. Again.

Although Nokia caught some flak for the misleading demonstration of the 920’s camera, we’ve always maintained that optical-image stabilization (OIS) is a very real and proven technology.

Still, Nokia has some catching up to do to prove to the world just how impressive the 920’s camera can be with OIS on board and as it turns out, the task is simple: just use it.

A Russian site managed to get a meeting with Nokia and to try the 920’s camera in a real-world experiment with the Samsung Galaxy S3. The test? Strap both phones to the top of a remote controlled car, and then drive it all over a bumpy rug.

PureView

The magic of the Lumia 920 PureView camera

The video is unedited and uncut, meaning there is no room for fudging here. In fact, you can see the folks having some problems finding and starting the video on the 920 (there looks to have been a few false starts).

But the pay off is worth it. When you see the actual footage of the Lumia 920 it is quite evident that the camera is being stabilized by the mini-springs that surround the camera, allowing for a smooth viewing experience.

There’s little doubt in our mind that we’ll be seeing some excellent videos from users in the coming months with this phone. And OIS isn’t just about video as it affects still photography too, allowing you to attain longer exposures without the handshake that causes image blurriness all too often. Those longer exposures translate into brighter pictures in low-light situations, like restaurants, clubs or even just chilling in your abode.

The moment we’re waiting for: the Nokia Lumia 920’s camera versus the new iPhone 5. That should be fun.
