Full screen ahead: Apple charts a course for your living room

Reports that Apple is working with Sharp and Foxconn to develop a prototype Apple-branded TV indicate an arrival may actually be imminent.

After churning for a year plus, the rumor mill can finally give it a rest.  Apple has begun testing designs for an Apple-branded television. So says the Wall Street Journal, which also reports that Sharp is helping to design the TV and will likely provide its display panels.

While speculation and supposition will be at a surplus in the coming months, we still have some time before the Apple fanboys and fangirls freak out. “It isn’t a formal project yet. It is still in the early stage of testing,” said an unnamed WSJ source.

Still, the fact that Han Hai Precision Industry Co. (A.K.A. Foxconn, the company that assembles the iPhone and iPad) has been collaborating with Sharp on design development for months, is a pretty clear harbinger of things to come. It’s now become less of a question regarding if we’ll see an Apple TV, and more a question of when. Almost everything about this still-hypothetical  TV – for now, anyway – remains a mystery.

Of course, we suspect some will launch right into imagining a world where Apple dominates all technology, and wrests the living room away from the manufacturers that currently dominate it. But to do that, it will have to out-compete some formidable foes. Google and Samsung, in particular, have been a bit pugnacious with Apple of late, and while one is already entrenched in the industry, the other is well on its way.

No doubt there are several buoys left to negotiate before Apple comes sailing into your living room, but – for now- the winds look favorable.

Brookstone Big Blue Media Tower looks to dominate your living room’s skyline

The Big Blue Media tower from gadget-guru Brookstone packs 2.1 audio into a vertical sound bar solution.

Brookstone recently introduced its new Big Blue Media Tower, the third entry in a line of Bluetooth-enabled speakers. It’s described as a 38-inch tall vertical sound bar and supports streaming from phones, tablets, computers, and any other Bluetooth devices you might possess. Despite its focus on wireless technology, however, the Big Blue includes a analog audio inputs, an auxiliary output jack and a digital optical audio input. Brookstone has even tossed in a six-foot optical cable as well.Big-Blue-Media-Tower-guts

The new kid on Brookstone’s block features dual 1.5-inch tweeters and 3-inch mid-range drivers. The tower also houses a ported, 30-watt powered subwoofer. Brookstone has designed Big Blue’s speakers so that they are aimed at different angles, a move which is said to produce an omnipresent sound. We saw speaker orientation make a difference with Boston Acoustics’ MC200air, and if the tower can produce a similarly immersive sound, we’d be excited to check it out.

The Big Blue Media Tower will be available online and in Brookstone stores on December 5th and is set to retail for $400
