Hands-free Swivl motion platform adds DSLR, tablet support

swivl with tablet

Definitely a great tool for professional photographers or anyone that likes to video chat, the new Swivl motion device can track your movement.

Announced on the official Swivl blog this week, the Swivl camera dock has been redesigned and upgraded from the original version to add support for iPads, Android tablets and DSLR cameras. Designed to track movement, the Swivl camera dock is ideal for video chatting while walking around a room at home as well as watching a tablet when moving around a conference room during a presentation at work. The premium Silver edition of the Swivl also comes with a wireless microphone for video chat calls on Skype as well as speakers to amplify the voice of the caller.

swivl with dslrFor photographers, the Swivl is an inexpensive solution for controlling the angle of the shot while standing in front of the camera or at a distance away from the camera in order to capture wildlife shots.

When combining a Swivl with a DSLR, a photographer can take more controlled panorama shots as well as time-lapse shots. In addition, photographers with an iPad can download a Swivl iOS application to control the angle and timing of the shots remotely. The application offers a remote preview function to view the shot as well as fire the trigger and alter settings such as zoom, ISO and white balance. An Android application is currently being developed as well.

This device could be useful to wedding photographers that want to capture some closeups of the bride during the wedding ceremony, but don’t want to stand near the alter snapping shots distracting from the ceremony. The Swivl device could also be useful to professional video bloggers that want to move around during a broadcast, but can’t afford to hire a cameraman yet.

According to the design specifications of the new Swivl, the motion platform can rotate a full 360 degrees and the user can adjust the angle up to a 20 degree tilt. The device comes with rechargeable batteries which last at least six hours and the Swivl also charge mobile devices.

The Swivl supports DSLR cameras that weigh up to eight pounds and the device includes a 3.5mm audio jack for connecting wireless audio. The team working on the Swivl plans to have four iOS applications ready for launch and will roll out similar Android applications shortly after the launch. They also plan on releasing a version on the hardware with a software development kit to encourage the design of custom Swivl applications.

According to the Kickstarter page, the new Swivl will roll out to Kickstarter backers by July 2013. Early adopters can still order the white version of the Swivl for a price of $99, but the $149 early adopter price on the silver version is already gone. The silver version of the Swivl can be ordered for $175. To date, the Swivl creators have already raised approximately 40 percent of the Kickstarter funding goal and have more than a month to completely fund the project.

Lots of updates going out and Amazon Mobile picks up Windows Phone 8 support

WP Central Lots of updates going out and Amazon Mobile picks up Windows Phone 8

Just like our London busses, you wait around for ages and then they all come at once. It seems that someone has flicked a switch somewhere and released a few updates today for Windows Phone.

Of particular note, Amazon Mobile on its way up to version 1.9.1 and picks up support for the oh-so close Windows Phone 8. It’s good to see some developers with early access readying their apps for the shiny new operating system which is only days away.

As regards to the Amazon Mobile update, we can’t say if it’s going to bring any new WP8 specific features or just being brushed up so that it works.

Also in the update to-do list today is

Xbox Live Extras – No change log (tsk tsk!) – I am unable to login to this at the moment with an error “We can’t access you avatar items, try later” so cant see what has changed, if you see something, do let us know.

Ceton Companion App – Brings a host of minor updates including Password authentication support and improved syncing and recording adjustments.

Podcatcher – Adds support for podcast audio and video streaming, podcast description improvements and some other UI changes.

Nokia’s App Highlights – No change log (tsk tsk!) But we know Nokia are constantly updating this to help improve app discoverability.

Good to see the updates train up and running again, if you are seeing any interesting updates going out, do let us know.

Sony Xperia T drops by the FCC with AT&T LTE support, we feign surprise

Android Central

You already knew the Sony Xperia T was headed to AT&T, right? The phone's cropped up a couple of times before sporting AT&Ts "globe" branding, and today brings further evidence, as the device has appeared at the FCC with support for AT&T-friendly LTE bands. The international Xperia T, due to launch next week, doesn't feature LTE support at all, and it looks like the AT&T version has undergone some minor changes in order to enable 4G connectivity. As we pointed out in earlier leaked renders of the AT&T Xperia T, the back is split up into segments, most likely to help out with antenna performance.

There's no word on exactly when the Xperia T will be arriving on AT&T, but given the half-year wait Sony fans endured for the Xperia Ion, we're not holding our breath.

Facebook Messenger app updated with texting support*

Facebook Messenger

You read that correctly - starting today, Facebook Messenger 2.0 will support sending text messages. However, that asterisk in the title denotes that there's a catch. Initially, only the HTC EVO 3D, HTC One X, LG Optimus Black, LG Optimus Hub, Samsung Galaxy Ace, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Samsung Galaxy S3, and Samsung Galaxy Y will support texting from the app. Facebook promises that more devices will be supported over the next few weeks.

Besides redesigning your messages inbox look like a SMS app, Facebook Messenger lets you swipe your finger to the left anywhere in the app to see who's available, and from there you can send a message. You can also put the friends you message most to the top through Favorites so they’re easily accessible.

Along with the updates coming to Facebook Messenger, the main Facebook app is getting an update today as well. It will receive the same SMS-style look for your messages and there will be an icon in the upper-right of your News Feed that shows who's available to chat. In addition, Facebook says that the new app has been made more secure and they've ironed out some bugs with push notifications and multi-photo uploads.

New version of 627.AM goes ad-free with Live Tile support

627.AM goes ad free for Windows Phones

627.AM is a popular daily assistant for your Windows Phone that helps you manage daily alarms, check in on the weather forecast and jot notes on daily tasks. Our initial impressions found 627.AM to be a simple, clever and gorgeous app. The original release had 627.AM being a free, ad supported app. If you liked the free version but didn't care for the banner ads, an updated, ad-free version hit the Marketplace recently.

Losing the ads will cost you a little but you will also get a few new features including a theme friendly Live Tile, refined navigation animations, and the alarm time on the main page will now pick up the right time format based on your Windows Phone settings.

627.AM

The ad free version of 627.AM (version 1.2) also contains the following fixes:

Fixed a memory issue to allow weather icons to play smoothlyFixed a bug to allow auto-copy to only happen once on the startup pageFixed a bug to allow the weather page refresh to pull data from the web service and not the cacheFixed date display on the weather page

For those who don't mind the ads there's no need to worry. The new features version 1.2 brings to the paid version of 627.AM will soon be released to the free version of 627.AM.

The paid, ad free version of 627.AM is currently running $1.49 and you can find it here at the Windows Phone Marketplace. The free, ad supported version of 627.AM can be snatched up here at the Marketplace.

Thanks, Justin, for the tip!
