Kindle iOS app update deletes entire libraries, Amazon warns against downloading

According to CNET, some Apple iOS users received an unpleasant surprise when they updated their Amazon Kindle app earlier today. The update contained a glitch that completely wiped Kindle libraries from their device.

After receiving complaints that the update erased a user’s entire library, Amazon added a note in the “What’s New” section that read: “There is a known issue with this update. If you are an existing Kindle for iOS user, we recommend you do not install this update at this time.” Naturally, those users who saw the warning were confused. Why would Amazon release an update and then say not to download it? 

As most mobile users don’t read the fine print when updating apps (it’s just as easy to click update and wait for the new and – what’s assumed to be – improved app to load on your phone), downloading the harmful update was all too easy. The release note was located in the “What’s New” drop down menu, so many users downloaded the update unknowing that it had the potential to erase their library.

An Amazon spokesperson told CNET that the company had identified the bug within the app update and said that users simply had to re-enter their Amazon account information for all content to return from the cloud. 

Amazon released a new update this afternoon, version 3.6.2, that contains a “fix for registration issue” and “various bug fixes and security fixes.” No word if the new update actually fixes the problem for users who actually downloaded Kindle for iOS version 3.6.1 or if it simply eliminates the issue.

One thing’s for sure; we’ll definitely be a lot better about reading the “What’s New” section before downloading any apps in the future.

Geneva WorldRadio: An update on a radio-era classic

A classic radio is reborn with twenty-first century technology.

Geneva’s new multi-function radio gives new meaning to the concept of world music. This radio features the design of the classic WorldRadio, which could receive all available radio stations of its day using the broadcasting technologies of a bygone era including FM, long and short wave. In other words it was just the thing for being on a deserted island with the likes of Gilligan. But that was then.

Today, for those who want to listen in from home, there is the new Geneva WorldRadio, which can receive audio broadcasts over FM, DAB digital radio in Europe, and via thousands of Internet radio stations. Available in a choice of three metallic finishes, including silver, red and black, it features a retro-looking, streamlined chassis design that offers an aluminum handle and tuning controls. But unlike the old school model, this one is a piece of true, 21st century technology.

It includes a digital color display with touch controls, digital FM tuner, Bluetooth receiver and even an alarm clock. The device can wirelessly stream Internet radio from any Bluetooth-enabled device including a computer, tablet or smartphone, while additional audio sources can be connected via a 3.5mm line input.

Geneva claims its single driver will deliver clean sound from top to bottom with bass extension as low as 80Hz – quite impressive for a 4-inch speaker in such a small box – but we can probably expect some reasonable low end out of this little thing considering the amplifier specs look pretty good. And it should kick out the jams for a while, as it can reportedly provide up to six hours of music playback via a built-in rechargeable battery.

The price: a rather hefty $300. That puts it into competition with some pretty stellar sounding wireless speakers.

Wii U’s massive mandatory update causing headaches for new owners

Just one day into its lifespan, the Nintendo Wii U is going through the gauntlet of intense consumer scrutiny. The first problem: A mandatory firmware update is causing some users to accidentally break their consoles.

In the era before the Internet, new game console launches were accompanied by scant television news coverage and traded anecdotes between friends and family that happened to get their hands on whatever new machine was making the rounds.

Now when a video game console launches, it comes with millions of testimonials from critics, pundits, fans, and consumers offering up their opinion on every personal blog, social network, and comments section across the web. The result is that every blemish, imperfection, and defect in the initial run of consoles is scrutinized in painstaking detail. Nintendo’s Wii U, released on Sunday, has received decent reviews for its peculiar tablet controller but a veritable drubbing due to technical problems. Chief among them: A mandatory firmware update is casuing major problems for Wii U out of the package.

As previously reported, the Wii U requires new owners to download updated software for the machine as soon as it’s activated in order to take advantage of its many Internet-based features, including access to the online social and gaming network Miiverse. The software in question is substantial, approximately 5GB of data. The downloading, installation, and updating process takes more than two hours to complete according to reporters like Ben Fritz of The Los Angeles Times. The drawn out process is prompting some Wii U owners, suspecting that something is wrong to unplug the console or power it down during the process. Unfortunately doing so irreparably breaks, or “bricks,” the Wii U.

At this point in time, it’s not unreasonable for Nintendo to expect consumers not to deactivate a console during a firmware update. Every PC operating system, smartphone, tablet, and gaming console provides some variation on the warning, “Do not reset or power down the machine during a software update.” That said, it’s unusual for Nintendo to release a consumer device lacking such substantial and crucial software. Why aren’t networked apps and services like Miiverse and the eShop included in the software pre-installed on the console?

Nintendo’s accustomed to these sorts of launch hiccups. That users are breaking their consoles due to impatience is hardly as big of a PR fiasco as having many users injuring themselves and breaking televisions due to over-enthusiastic sessions of Wii Sports.

Apple has pushed out an update to their iWork suite consisting of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote that not only bring support for iOS 6, but also add the ability to open your documents in another app. When you go to Share and Print, "Open in Another App" is now an option. You'll be able to choose between Apple's format (Pages, Numbers, Keynote), Microsoft's format (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), or PDF and the apps that support the chosen format will be available.

Before this feature was available, users would have to use the workaround of emailing the document to themselves and then opening it in the app of their choice. It's great to see Apple prioritize the usability of their apps. Even though this was the only thing new added to Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, I'm pretty excited about this update. How about you?

That is a very nice and extremely useful feature, especially since I (contrary to the opinions of many) find the iPad to be a pretty good productivity tool, and since I use a Windows computer, this helps me to continue working on my documents..

What does this sentence even mean?

It means that when you open in another app you can choose to send the document in Apple's extensions (.pages, .numbers, .keynote), Microsoft's extensions (.doc, .xls, .ppt), or as a PDF. Whichever format you choose will determine which apps you can open the document in.

What is also nice is if you have an HP printer that is not supported by AirPrint, you can download any of the many free print apps and print docs directly after opening the file in said app. Print Central is a good one for this.

Nice. Works well enough with DropBox that I bought Numbers and Pages. Considering you can use the apps on all the iPhones and iPads in the family (up to 10), its worth it.
