Last week we highlighted the new pinball game Dr. Pickaxe as one of our new favorite games for Windows Phone. Developed by Tainicom (who also made The Juggler), the game was on special for $0.99 during its first week and received our 'Editor's Choice' distinction.

Unfortunately that game had a tiny bug in it resulting in the first few games registered under ‘trial’ even after purchased. Even though it only had a limited effect the bug was quickly identified and a v1.1 was pushed out—but then Microsoft held up publication due to their own woes and so the game was hidden until fixed.

The good news is now version 1.1 is on the Marketplace, working as it should and it is still at the $0.99 price point for another week.

We noted that the game has excellent 3D graphics, a rich pinball story line (with multiple hidden tables) and is a real blast to play, performing well on even early generation Windows Phones. The game has a free trial, which we recommend you try as the game is representative of a standout indie effort on our platform.

webOS Community Edition sees first release as webOS Ports' LunaCE Alpha

HP released the webOS 3.0.5 LunaSysMgr component to open source back in late June and worked with webOS homebrew pioneers WebOS Internals to put together the WebOS Ports group to guide development of the Community Edition project. We've seen plenty of what webOS developers have been able to hack into the open source component, but something that normal people like you and me could install wasn't yet available.

Technically speaking, what we have now is something that normal people could install, but it's not something that normal people should install. At least not yet. After two months of work the first alpha releases for the WebOS Ports version of the Community Edition LunaSysMgr have been released as the new LunaCE package that incorporates some of what we've seen unveiled and some new things too.

There's something very important to note: it's an alpha release, so it's guaranteed neither stability nor functionality. We installed it on one of our TouchPads to give it a test drive and it's generally pretty smooth, though it has some quirks (like odd spacing in the dock and issues with PIN locks). If you depend on your TouchPad, it's not something we'd recommend installing just yet, just to be safe. Plus it's good to be able to contribute to the process if you're going to install the LunaCE alpha - it's known to have some bugs, but there are likely others, and the WebOS Ports team needs some first-level testing to make it happen. Don't feel bad if you think you should wait for the beta version, or the release version; there's no shame in that.

So what all does LunaCE offer at this point? Infinite card cycling (reach the end of your spread of multitasking cards, swipe again to jump to the far end), tabbed card stacks (swipe from the edge in a stacked card to see a column of mini cards in that same stack to quickly switch), edge bezel card switching (swipe, slide, or drag in from the bezel to move to the next card - pictured above), and a universal search icon in the title bar, among other things. All of these features are controlled through the latest version of Tweaks, which adds a new section for Luna options.

LunaCE is installable through Preware, but you'll need both access to the alpha feeds and the newest alpha version of Preware. Getting yourself set up in the alpha feeds requires terminal access on your TouchPad (either by hooking up through WebOS Quick Install or using Xecutah) and following the instructions at testing.preware.org. Once you're set up with the alpha feeds, installing LunaCE is a simple matter: bring it up in Preware, tap install, and then performa a Luna Restart. Hope into Tweaks to turn things on or off and you're ready to rock on the bleeding edge of homebrew. There is, of course, the unaltered Palm LunaSysMgr available to install in LunaCE's place should things not be to your liking.

We'll be keeping an eye on LunaCE as it progresses, it's am exciting homebrew project and we're glad that we've got WebOS Ports and WebOS Internals on the job with the support from HP.

Windows Phone App Roundup: Password Managers

Windows Phone Central's Roundup of Password Managers

Passwords, Usernames, Account Numbers, PIN Numbers... we all have them and it can be challenging keeping track of them all and keeping that information secure. Enter our Windows Phone where apps are readily available to help us remember, manage, secure and generate passwords for all our accounts, websites, and what nots.

We recently took a look at SplashID, a password manager from the Windows Mobile days that was recently transitioned to Windows Phone. It's a decent password manager and we were curious what else was out there. Based on your comments from the SplashID review and looking at several password apps on the Marketplace ourselves, a roundup was born.

We've gathered six password managers from the Windows Phone Marketplace that could be worthy alternatives to SplashID. As with any roundup, if a title doesn't make the short list it isn't a reflection of that app. We just have so much time in the day and space in the column. If we've missed your personal favorite, chime in down below in the comments.

Sky Wallet (free trial/$3.99): As the title suggests, Sky Wallet is a mobile wallet that holds all your banking, password, and other account information. It also is tightly integrated with your SkyDrive account for synchronizing a backup file for all your data. A backup file that can be used to sync with a desktop companion app as well.  You'll need to purchase the full version of Sky Wallet where you can request the download link for the desktop client and validation code.

Along with templates covering websites, bank accounts, email accounts, WiFi network info, and more. In addition you can create your own templates, customizing the existing templates and delete the ones you don't particularly care for. There's even an embedded password generator to help you come up with a secure password should you need it.

Data is encrypted using AES 256bit encryption and the app itself is protected by a master password. There is a free trial available for Sky Wallet so you can try things out before you buy. The full version, which will also give you access to the desktop component, is currently running $3.99.

Handy Safe (14 day trial/$1.99): Handy Safe utilizes 448 bit Blowfish data encryption to insure data safety for all your confidential information. Handy Safe has over thirty templates for passwords, credit cards, bank accounts, websites, and more.

Handy Safe, as with other password managers, is password protected.  The layout is more in folder format with your root directory having your main folders for business, personal and sample files or cards. From there you can create sub-folders and cards for all your personal information. Cards can be built off the templates, customized or create one from scratch. The app contains more than sixty five icons for quick reference.

Database fields can be active (e.g. URLs treated as hyperlinks, phone numbers as speed dials, etc) and there is a desktop component to sync your data with.

There is a fourteen day trial version for Handy Safe to let you try things out before buying. The full version of Handy Safe will run you $1.99 and you can grab it all here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

PasswordCryptMango ($.99): PasswordCryptMango may be the most basic password manager in the roundup but that shouldn't imply that it's not worth a try. Where the other members of the roundup cover a wide range of confidential information, PasswordCryptMango deals with user identifications and passwords for websites.

You simply enter the website name, your User ID, and password then tap save and a data card is generated. If you need help coming up with a password, there is a password generator available.

While PasswordCryptMango doesn't have as many bells and whistle as the other members of the roundup, if all you need is an app to keep track of all your website credentials it's not too terribly bad a choice. PasswordCryptMango is password protected but lacks a search function which may make finding things a little cumbersome and the absence of a desktop component keeps entry limited to the Windows Phone keyboard.

There isn't a trial version for PasswordCryptMango but you can try PasswordCrypt (freebie found here) to get a feel for things. The full version of PasswordCryptMango is currently running $.99 and you can find it here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

7Pass (free version/$.99): 7Pass is an unofficial client for the popular online password manager KeePass. With that being said, KeePass has a decent desktop component to allow you access to your protected data.  7Pass would be the mobile client to pull everything to your Windows Phone.

7Pass allows you to create databases that can be synced with Dropbox, Skydrive, WebDav, or Web Server accounts. There is a Demo Database installed to give the feel for things. You can set a password for the app itself, with each database being password protected as well.

Each database on 7Pass can be set up to meet your needs and follows a folder layout. Folders or groups can be generated to sort similar items together (e.g. email accounts, bank accounts, internet, etc). Entry fields are limited to the title, user name, password and URL. There is a free form section in each entry for notes (here's where you could add account numbers). The Entry style can not be modified but there is a free form text area for notes. You also can add text fields from the three-dot menu but they are viewed on a separate screen than the main entry screen.

One nice feature on 7Pass is the password generator. Not only can you set the parameters for the password but it generates a grouping of passwords so you can select the one that stands outs.

7Pass is a decent option to consider but some may find the navigation a little cumbersome. There are two versions of 7Pass available on the Marketplace. You have 7Pass Free and a paid version, 7Pass, that is currently running $.99.

LastPass (free fourteen day trial/$12 for annual service): LastPass is developed by the same group who brought us XMarks, a fantastic browser bookmark manager. Like XMarks, LastPass is a very impressive application that not only covers your Windows Phone but also has a desktop application and desktop browser integration. In many ways, LastPass is the complete package for password management.

As far as the Windows Phone angle is concerned, the app itself is password protected and allows you to have access to all your confidential information LastPass protects. The app itself is password protected and you can create entries from within the app. The app has a built in browser with the ability to key in your passwords as needed. The desktop application goes a bit further with automatic form filling, one click log in, and synchronization across multiple browsers.

LastPass comes across as a desktop solution with a mobile client where other apps are mobile solutions with desktop components. Can't say that one is better than the other but if you're looking for a password manager that has more reach, LastPass is worth a look.

The app itself is free with a fourteen day trial period. From there it will cost you $12 annually for the LastPass service. There is a free version of the LastPass service available but it lacks the mobile support for your Windows Phone. You can find the LastPass app here at the Windows Phone Marketplace and you can find the LastPass desktop app here at the LastPass website.

Cryp2Pass (free trial/$2.99): Let's get the technical lingo out of the way for Cryp2Pass first. The app uses AES256 for saving your data and SHA256 algorithms to generate passwords. In practice, Cryp2Pass manages your passwords for accounts in a nice, dare I say Metro, layout.

Cryp2Pass, the app, is password protected and has pages for favorite accounts, all entries, account listings, and menu) options. There are ten predefined templates with the capability of editing them as well as creating your own templates. Each entry contains two pages of data. A General Page has your title, group listing, description, and username. Then you have the Fields Page where you can add more specific information such as passwords, account numbers, URL, network details, etc. The templates will have predefined fields that will populate this page or you can add custom fields to your liking.

You can generate passwords for each entry and set a date to generate a new password. If you have an account that requires you to change your password every 90 days or so, this is a nice tool to keep you up to date.

While there may not be a desktop component to Cryp2Pass, you can back up your data to your computer (Cryp2Pass desktop utility required). Cryp2Pass lacks cloud storage compatibility, which might be not appeal to everyone. This feature is reportedly in the works so we'll keep our fingers crossed it appears in an update in the near future. Nonetheless, Cryp2Pass comes across as a nicely laid out, quality app for your Windows Phone.

There is a trial version for Cryp2Pass with the full version running $2.99. You can grab Cryp2Pass here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Asides from these apps, another solution to password management is creating an Excel document that covers all your passwords, usernames, PIN numbers, account numbers and other confidential information. Store the document on your Skydrive account and it can be accessed through your Windows Phone Skydrive app.

But if you're looking for a more secure method of managing your passwords, accounts and other confidential items any of these apps might be what you're looking for. It's just finding which one fits your needs the best.

The developer of Markets & Me has released its premium version to the Marketplace. Markets & Me + is to compliment the recent app update that rolled out last week. This premium version of the app will not sport advertisements and will feature a few exclusive features that users will have to upgrade to should they wish to make use of extra functionality...

So what's included in the premium version that is also absent from Markets & Me?

Ability to add financial indicators such as moving averages, MACD, RSI, etc.Many users informed they wanted to be able to customise the hub, removing predefined indices/currencies they don’t care about, this is now possible. HP unfazed by Microsoft's Surface tablet, have their own Windows 8 plans

HP's charging ahead with their Windows 8 tablet plans, and they're not going to let anyone, least of which OS-supplier and OEM competitor Microsoft hold them back. HP's also not letting the debacle that befell the TouchPad a year ago slow them down. HP's teased the Slate 8 tablet a few times in their new advertising campaign, and they've already said that they're going to go with Intel for their first Windows 8 tablet (and thus doing a Windows 8 tablet). We'd speculated that Microsoft OEMs like HP would be perturbed by Microsoft's entry into the manufacturer space, and while Acer's CEO might be unhappy, it seems HP isn't too upset by the Surface.

Said John Solomon, HP SVP for America sales in the Printing and Personal Systems Group, to CRN:

"I believe Microsoft was basically making a leadership statement and showing what's possible in the tablet space. Our relationship has not changed at all due to Microsoft's announcement. In fact, I applaud it -- I think it's great that they are getting out in front and [showing] what's possible."

This stands in stark contrast to Acer CEO JT Wang, who said Microsoft should "think twice" about their intentions for Surface and how it could affect relations with OEMs like his company. HP for their part is putting on a smiling face, at least for the public. HP has massive reach and scale in the retail space, and so long as Microsoft's pricing for Surface isn't insane, HP shouldn't have many issues selling copies of their Slate 8 tablet, assuming that people want them.

Of course, what we really want is a new webOS tablet, and we have no idea if that's anything HP's interested in doing at this point. And they wouldn't have to worry about competing with Microsoft for the same customers…

Vodafone Germany rolls out carrier billing for BlackBerry App World purchases

Great news for those of you in Germany on the Vodafone network. The company have today announced that mobile payments will be supported through BlackBerry App World. This will benefit BlackBerry users that do not have access to, or do not want to use a credit card to link to their account.
In addition Vodafone customers will also have the opportunity to perform in-app purchases giving the the freedom to buy without leaving the running application. All current BlackBerry models will support the new payment option as long as users have the latest version of BlackBerry App World installed.

Carrier App World payments are not new to BlackBerry although it is taking a while for the support to get to all networks. It certainly makes life easier than having to worry about a credit card or a PayPal account so I'm all for it. In this day and age with so many teenagers using BlackBerry this should also increase their ability to purchase from BlackBerry App World without having to pester mum or dad for credit card details. Everyone's a winner!

While we have had file manager apps on webOS phones for a while since the release of the amazing Internalz / InternalzPro, one limitation of that app was that you could only act on one file at a time. If you wanted to move or delete multiple files, you had to go one-by-one. With the swipe-to-delete functionality of webOS, deleting a few files at one time wasn't a big deal, but anything more than a couple was quite a chore. The release of the TouchPad brought Gemini File Manager that allowed you to interact with multiple files, but you were still limited to one file at a time for webOS smartphones. Fortunately, Archive Manager by pcworldSoftware fills in this gap by allowing you to select multiple files and then choose which action you want to perform on those.  Unfortunately, since Archive Manager is a hybrid Mojo/PDK app, it will only run webOS phones running webOS 2.1 or higher, as well as the TouchPad.

To move or delete files or folders with Archive Manager:

Navigate to the desired directory within Archive ManagerScroll through the files or folders and tap the checkbox on the right-side of the screen to select the file. Note that you can power-swipe in Archive Manager to quickly scroll to the top or bottom of the listingWhen finished selecting, tap the  button on the bottom of the screen, select "action" in the pop-up and then choose Move or DeleteIf you are moving files/folders, you will be presented with another screen to select the folder to move the files/folders toIf you are deleting files/folders, you will need to confirm the delete on a pop-up menu on the bottom of the screen.

Archive Manager is available in the webOS App Catalog for $1.99 and is compatible with all webOS devices running webOS 2.1 or higher.

By the way, my next app (which I'm going to submit today) will also support copying of multiple files. Maybe that feature will also make it into Archive Manager with some update.
