Verizon gives Droid Razr HD and Maxx owners some Jelly Bean for the holidays

Verizon has announced that its second generation Droid Razr handset will be getting the long-awaited update to Android 4.1 next week.

Motorola Droid Razr HD, HD Maxx, and Razr M

A few days age we reported that Verizon has slashed the price of Motorola’s Droid Razr M for the holiday season, but that’s not the only surprise for Droid fans. On Friday, the carrier also announced that all three Motorola phones – the Droid Razr HD, Droid Razr Maxx HD, and Droid Razr M will be eligible for the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update as soon as next week.

The software upgrade will be pushed out to Droid Razr M owners in phases over the course of next week, Verizon said. The update will come to users over the air (OTA) but customers who wish to manually download Android 4.1 through the settings menu will be able to do so as well. Android 4.1 should take between 10 and 15 minutes to download and install, and users can manually check for the update by heading to Settings > About phone > System updates > Download.

Verizon has a support page detailing instructions on how to install Android 4.1 and outlining the benefits of using Jelly Bean. Some major improvements include Google Now, a Smart Keyboard that predicts the next word before a user types it, better notifications, and improvements to overall speed and usability.  To check out Verizon’s full list of features or for more instructions, view its support page here.

This is the Verizon’s second smartphone series to get the highly anticipated Jelly Bean update. Back in September, Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus received Google’s mobile operating system upgrade. These are the only devices on Verizon’s network that have been confirmed for the Jelly Bean update at the moment. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2, which just saw its Verizon launch on Thursday, comes with the updates software out of the box.

The Droid Razrs will also be getting ISIS NFC capabilities. This mobile wallet feature allows owners of the device to turn their smartphone into their own personalized digital wallet. Users can make payments simply by tapping their phone at ISIS compatible merchants, though ISIS is only up and running in Salt Lake City and Austin, Texas at the moment.

This news also comes just after Consumer Reports named Verizon as the top cell phone carrier in the United States, although AT&T was ranked as providing the best LTE service.

Supposed first Jelly Bean build for Samsung Galaxy Note leaks out

Android Central

Excitement continues to build around the world for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 -- we're in NYC tonight for the Next Big Thing event -- but what of its predecessor? Owners of the original Galaxy Note are eagerly awaiting word on Jelly Bean for their beloved devices.

XDA Developers forums member eybee1970 has posted what is apparently the first full leaked official build of Android 4.1 for the original Note. However, this is an extremely early build, and flashing to your own devices is discouraged. Contained within are things we would expect to see from Jelly Bean -- Google Now for instance -- but there are things missing, and big nasty bugs within making this one not for the faint at heart.

Word is, that the official update could be due to drop in December. A software update in early September brought a selection of the Samsung features from the Galaxy S3 and Note 2 to the Note, but we're under no illusions that it's Jelly Bean you folks want.

Slated for a Q3 release, we heard following the show that the A110 would in fact be bumped up to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean before it hit the shelves. True to their word, it's Q3 -- just, the device has been bumped to Jelly Bean, and a formal release has been announced.

The A110 is already up for pre-order with at least one UK based retailer, priced at £180. Manually update your Verizon Galaxy Nexus to the official Jelly Bean build

Verizon G Nex

You've been waiting since July for some Jelly Bean on your Verizon Galaxy Nexus, and you just can't wait any longer. It's pushing out as we speak, but who knows when it will make it to your device. There's no way in hell you're going to sit one more day and read about everyone enjoying Jelly Bean while you mash the button to check for updates. We got ya.

The good news is you don't have to wait. The easy to unlock bootloader on the Nexus means it's relatively easy to flash the update yourself, and you too can join in the Jelly-fest. (I'm trade marking Jelly-fest, BTW). You'll need to be running a stock build, and have all the right tools, but thankfully the fellows in the Verizon Nexus forums have you covered.

They'll have you up and running in no time with clear and simple directions, and they're there to answer any and all questions should something go haywire. Click the link, grab your cable, and don't forgot to thank the dedicated folks who took the time to put this one together.

HTC One X/XL Jelly Bean updates tipped for October release

Android Central

HTC has made no secret of its plans to launch Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for its leading HTC One phones, but so far it's offered nothing in the way of release dates. It looks like the manufacturer's getting closer to having its updates finalized, though, as veteran mobile site MoDaCo is reporting that the updates are due to being rolling out in October.

According to MoDaCo founder Paul O'Brien, the upcoming EE UK HTC One XL will ship with Jelly Bean, as will the rumored One X+ -- a refreshed version of the Tegra 3 version said to sport higher clock speeds. Around the same time, existing One X and One XL devices will get bumped up to Android 4.1, MoDaCo claims.

The site has no info on when the One S will get Jelly Bean, but given that it's already confirmed for an update, we're hopeful it won't be too far behind. As ever, take this with a pinch of salt until we've got updates rolling out to devices. Nevertheless, we'll be crossing our fingers come October.

ASUS Transformer Pad TF300 gets its Jelly Bean update

ASUS Transformer Pad TF300 Jelly Bean

Some good news out of the ASUS camp this morning, as it appears the Transformer Pad TF300 is in the midst of getting its promised update to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean. Erckul and prissysox in our forums are leading the way on this one, noting that you're warned Adobe Flash is no longer working (but you knew that already), and that apparently Wifi Direct took a hit as well.

The update appears to only be over-the-air at the moment, so keep an eye out.
