Here’s Johnny! McAfee lands in the US, next chapter in bizarre life unknown

Eccentric tech pioneer John McAfee is back in the US after being deported from Guatemala. “I’ve been running through jungles and rivers and oceans and I think I need to rest for a while,” McAfee told reporters in Miami Wednesday night.

The life of John McAfee is, to put it mildly, extraordinary. If a scriptwriter went to a Hollywood movie producer with such a tale, they’d be laughed out of the room. But John McAfee is real. And he’s back in the US.

The software tycoon landed at Miami International Airport on a flight from Guatemala on Wednesday evening and immediately found himself in the middle of a media scrum.

“I’ve been running through jungles and rivers and oceans and I think I need to rest for a while,” McAfee told reporters.

He wasted little time, however, in getting a post up on his blog. Though later removed, the LA Times managed to catch it before it went offline. In the post, titled “I am in South Beach”, he said he currently had “no phone, no money, no contact information.”

“I was escorted off of the plaane [sic] by Customs and Immigration,” he wrote, adding that 10 agents “whisked me to a safe place, asked some questions, and then said, ‘Where would you like to go?’”

The officials apparently took him to a taxi stand from where he made his way to the Beacon Hotel in South Beach. The post was removed and replaced with a message that asked people – members of the international media currently scrambling to get to the Beacon Hotel no doubt among them – to “please respect John’s privacy this evening.” Fat chance of that happening.

McAfee fled his home in Belize last month after police on the island said they wanted to talk to him about his neighbor who died from gunshot wounds on November 11.

Claiming that the whole episode was part of a government plot against him, McAfee fled to Guatemala where he was promptly arrested for entering the country illegally. On Wednesday night he was deported from Guatemala to the US.

But what next for the eccentric multi-millionaire? LA Times reporter Christine Mai-Duc told BBC radio that it was unclear if McAfee was a free man, saying there was currently no information from officials in the US, Guatemala or Belize as to whether any charges can or will be brought against the 67 year old.

Mai-Duc said that the Belize authorities understand that for the US to consider returning McAfee to the island would require him to be defined as a suspect in the death of his neighbor. Up to now the authorities in Belize have stated that he is not a suspect but instead “a person of interest with whom they’d like to talk.”

But with McAfee, it seems to be less of a case of what the authorities have planned for him and more about what he has planned for them.

Nokia’s Bloomberg app lands in the Store. It’s quite awesome.

Bloomberg

One of the nicest financial apps is now out

Hope our title didn’t spoil things but yes, the Bloomberg app co-developed with Nokia is now available in the Nokia Collection—well if you search for it or use our link below.

The app is admittedly very nice especially with the rolling stock ticker across the top 1/3 of the screen. Features are abundant with smooth scrolling and just a well thought out design.

WP Central

Have stocks? You can enter in your shares, price point and when you purchased them to see a running tracker of your assets. You also get ~1 minute video clips on some of the latest financial news and radio too.

Under settings you can even customize the ticker, what news you want to see and get alerts for breaking news.  So yeah, we’re impressed.

If you have a Nokia Lumia phone, you can grab the official Bloomberg app here in the Collection or just scan the QR code below. Thanks, pstorm13, for the tip

United Airlines Android app lands (hard) in Google Play

United Airlines Android App

United Airlines has its own Android application. That's good news for you folks who fly the airline reborn from the merger with Continental in 2010, and who have been waiting for United finally poke its head into the tech of 2012.

The app is full of functionality, which is good, because visually it's as poor as United's full website. (Then again, if you fly United on a regular basis, you're probably already used to that.) But you can search and purchase flights (the latter half of that equation isn't something all U.S. airlines offer). You can get flight status, airport maps, check your existing reservations and, perhaps most important, get mobile boarding passes.

Just don't expect it to look good, or even attempt to follow Android design guidelines. And you'll need to be patient if it decides to chew on some data for a few minutes -- there's no way to cancel an action without force-quitting the app.

The app is free, as you'd expect. We've got a slew of screen shots after the break.

National Australian Bank (NAB) app lands in the Marketplace

News Posted on Sat, 18 Aug 2012 11:22 am EDT by George Ponder NAB App for Windows Phone

If you bank in Australia and have a Windows Phone, the National Australian Bank (NAB) has released their Windows Phone app to help you keep track of your banking needs. The NAB App allows you to access services on the go such as:

Balance InquiryTransaction HistoryTransfer funds to linked accountsPay billsView your NAB online trading portfolio

Your access to the National Australian Bank is secured by a four digit passcode and data is protected with 128 bit encryption.

National Australian Bank (NAB) App

Along with access to banking features, the NAB app also has a branch and ATM finder that will map out the nearest locations. You can keep up with the @NAB Twitter feed and YouTube channel and the app has a helpful currency exchange rate calculator.

The NAB app is laid out nicely in the Windows Phone Modern UI fashion (see... I didn't say Metro) and I wouldn't mind seeing my bank come out with something similar. Unfortunately the closest NAB branch is over 14,000 kilometers away. However if you are a NAB banking customer the app does look useful. The NAB app is a free app that you can grab here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Thanks, Dean, for the tip!
